Qigong is an ancient mind-body wellness system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques, self-applied massage, focused intention and other natural methods. The word Qigong (chi-gung) is made up of two words. Qi can be translated to mean the life force or vital energy that flows through all things in the universe. Gong means mastery, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. Together, Qigong means cultivating, working with life force energy.
A typical qigong practice involves slow, repetitive, fluid movements coordinated with the breath and guided visualization of qi moving through the body inducing a calm, mindful state and relaxation.
Self-empowering approach to health-care. Qigong is practiced to maintain health and increase vitality by building strength naturally from inside out. This implies a self empowering approach, as compared to expecting a miracle pill from outside. In addition, many of the movements in Qigong mirror the movements in nature and change in line with the seasons. Therefore, we can easily adapt our practices to live in tune with nature’s cycles.
Maintaining balance. Our bodies seek balance, through homeostatic mechanisms. According to Qigong, the world exists in a harmonious balance of opposites: Yin & Yang. Even though our bodies might have excess, deficiency, or stagnation of energies, with Qigong’s routines, we can learn to balance them and smooth their flow to maintain a healthier life.
Focused intention and cultivation of easeful meditative state. Qigong’s slow movements are coordinated with the breath and a focused intention. Therefore, every movement helps you stay connected with the present moment. Qigong is regarded as “moving meditation”, and might be very helpful, especially for people who have difficulty with seated meditation.
Scientific studies are showing many health benefits that you can get form this practice. In fact, the health benefits are so numerous, some people call this kind of movement: medication in motion. A recent report by Harvard Medical School describes these ancient Chinese practices as one of the most powerful ways to improve both physical and mental health and among its key benefits lists the following:
* Increased circulation
* Better balance
* Pain relief
* Improved quality of sleep
* Increased bone density
* A sharper mind
* Improved mood and reduced anxiety
* Less stress as you learn to regulate your breathing patterns.
The gentle movements of Qigong can be easily adapted, even for the physically challenged and can be practiced by all age groups. It can be practiced anywhere and it does not require any special equipment or clothing.
