What exactly is microneedling, and how does it work?

Microneedling is also known as “collagen induction therapy”, a natural, non-surgical treatment that uses short fine, sterile needles to create tiny, controlled punctures into the skin to prompt natural collagen production. 

In a micro-needling treatment, micro channels are created in the skin, using a single-use needle cartridge connected to a motorized device. The cartridge has small needles that penetrate the skin through the repeated oscillation/ action of a pen-like device. When such mini channels are created, the skin’s natural repair response is to start producing collagen, elastin and new skin cells to heal those micro channels resulting in more youthful and even skin.

Depending on the depth of the needle penetration, this can offer simple skin rejuvenation, significantly increased product absorption and clinical treatment of scars, wrinkles and hair growth. It's a suitable treatment for all skin types. 

The pen used in microneedling comes from an FDA approved manufacturer.

What Is Nanoneedling?

Nanoneedling uses the same type of oscillating motion to treat the skin but the cartridge encompasses round, silicone tips, instead of fine needles. Nano-Needling only affects the epidermis, treating within the upper .15 mm of the skin. The benefits of this treatment include pigmentation reduction, increased cell turnover, skin rejuvenation and an immediate glow with no downtime. As nanoneedling is gentle, the lips, infraorbital ridge, and other sensitive areas can be treated with it. In addition, Nanoneedling might be better for very mature skin since keratinocytes move to the surface with age.

Is the treatment painful?

The procedure may cause a mild stimulation, particularly in facial areas with thinner skin or when applied directly over bony areas like the forehead. To address this, lighter pressure is applied in such regions, and needles or press tacks are utilized on the limbs to balance energy. To minimize sensations, a numbing cream can be applied to the face 15 minutes before the treatment. Most individuals experience a comfortable treatment session.

How many treatments will I need to see results?

Results typically start to show up with a series of treatments. The results vary based on factors like age, diet, healthcare routine, and skin conditions. Typically, improvements become noticeable after 2-4 treatments, depending on age. The changes start to happen after the first treatment but the treatments build upon one another. For optimal results, many individuals undergo 4-6 consecutive treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Maintenance sessions may be needed periodically after achieving the best results. Certain conditions, such as acne, age spots, and hyperpigmentation, might require 10-12 consecutive monthly treatments. 

How long do microneedling results last?

In general, microneedling results last for about 3-5 years, depending on how long new collagen lasts in your skin and the degree of your skin concerns. The results change with age, i.e. younger people can easily build new collagen and the results will last longer, while mature skin requires longer time to rebuild collagen and may require more frequent treatments, like semi-annually.

How long is the downtime?

Almost none. Most people turn to work the next day. However, we do ask you to carefully read and apply After-care instructions.

What’s the difference between microneedling and microdermabrasion?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses super fine needles to promote collagen production, while microdermabrasion is a noninvasive treatment that is used to even out the skin tone/texture. 

What are the topicals used in microneedling?

It's important to use to choose your skin care products wisely, clean and toxin-free during and after micro needling. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is considered the main ingredient in TCM Microneedling. Hyaluronic Acid is a substance found naturally in our skin that holds water and helps keep it hydrated and plump. Other serums and skin care products are clean ingredient sourced, with no-hormone disrupters and cruelty free promise.

There can be custom serums and a specific techniques to be used for the treatment of scars/ anti-aging and/or pigmentation or hair restoration.

How much does it cost?

Microneedling is one of the most cost-effective options available for people looking for a completely natural way to rejuvenate their skin without painful surgery or downtime. 

One session $300. 

Series of three treatments $750, savings of $150.

During the period in between microneedling sessions, for skin conditions, Acu-glow protocol and facial acupuncture and for hair restoration scalp acupuncture bundled pricing options are available. Adding those sessions in between and regular, more frequent treatments will enhance desired results.

Are there any contraindications?

Yes. Here are some conditions that suggest avoiding or postponing treatment:

· Undergoing chemo/ radiation therapy

· Pregnancy – nano needling is safe

· Presence of an active skin or autoimmune condition affecting the skin

· Active, inflammatory acne or herpes labialis (cold sores or shingles) 

· Moderate to severe chronic skin disease such as eczema and psoriasis

· Predisposition to keloids

· Warts in area to be treated

· Uncontrolled diabetes or immunosuppression

· Use of Acutane within 6 months prior to treatment

· Use of Botox or other fillers/injectables within the past two months

· Microbladed eyebrows to be avoided

· Smoking or a history of poor wound healing

· Patients on coagulant or blood thinners such as Coumadin or Plavix

· Active sunburn

· Recent facial surgery or dermatological procedure

· Hemophilia

· Any reason for increased photosensitivity (due to medication)

· Highly sensitive skin

What does a treatment involve?

The treatment itself involves the insertion of very fine facial acupuncture needles into specific points on the face and head, with body points added depending on your individual needs. Each treatment takes about 60 minutes, with the needles left in place for about 30 minutes. During this time you relax at a comfortable treatment table listening to calming music.

How long is the treatment course, and when can I expect to see results?

A standard course of treatment is 10 individual sessions, ideally to be completed in succession of once or twice per week as your schedule allows (therefore 5 to 10 weeks of treatment).

For your first time, it is recommended to opt for the standard set of 10 treatments for best results, and results are often noticed after the first 4 treatments.

How long do the effects last?

Every patient is different, and length of effect is dependent on several factors including age, health of the skin, and general health. Results have potential to last from 1 to 5 years, and maintenance treatments are usually performed once per month or season to maximize longevity of treatment.

Is there any contraindications?

BRUISING can happen. Small bruising is hard to completely avoid due to the vast network of small capillaries in the face.
